Middle School Program

6th through
8th Grade Curriculum

6th - 8th Grade

Our Middle School Program focuses on preparing our students for studies at the high school level and beyond. Students participate in academically rigorous classes taught by subject-specific teachers. Midterms and final exams provide students with the opportunity to synthesize and demonstrate their learning over an extended period. Students develop important study skills and habits.

Students learn and utilize 21st-century skills through our one-to-one Chromebook Program. Teachers deliver instruction via engaging and meaningful media. Students practice skills independently, communicate with teachers, and collaborate.

St. Catherine’s Middle School students have additional opportunities to enrich learning and build community.  All Middle School students participate in the House system which builds community by bringing together students from different grades to encourage friendship, create a supportive environment, promote service projects throughout the year to help our students make a positive difference in the world, and foster healthy competition between houses to teach teamwork, sportsmanship, and cooperation.  The Middle Schoolers also discover a world of possibilities with a diverse range of elective classes designed to ignite creativity and foster skills for life.  Students participate in elective classes like chess, photography, graphic design, improv acting, self-defense, ultimate frisbee, and gardening.  Both Houses and electives help our students prepare for a life of service and community.

Religion

The primary resources for the Religion Program are Sacred Scripture, the Spirit of Truth series by Sophia Press, Pope John Paul II's Theology of the Body program, and The Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Language Arts

The Language Arts Program includes literature, grammar, and writing. Resources for this subject draw from the Voyages Grammar and Collins Writing programs. The Literature Program provides students with cross-curricular novel units combined with literature from the Glencoe Reading Series.

The Math Program is differentiated into two tracks: on-level and advanced. Advanced placement includes 7th Grade Pre-Algebra and 8th Grade Algebra. Sadlier Math is the primary resource. Simple Solutions is used as a secondary resource.
